ponds

Hello, This is my Mom & Dads pond. I know they put such hard work into it that they dont know how to show it off to the world so I thought I would do it for them. They live in Southcentral Kansas. Although I am not sure how many gallons it is I know it is over 900. My dad dug it out with a Bobcat.

It is about 5 feet deep and slopes up to about 2.5 feet at the edges. They have installed a skimmer in the middle which is lifted out by a pole. The pump is kept behind the fence and does a great job. As far as Algae growth, Mom has controlled this with chemicals. She had used Barley Bails but found that they did not work as well as thought, and they also made a mess as well as ruined the view of the waterfall (which is where your suppoed to put them. Mom has added about 15 Koi to the pond, the largest is about 2 feet in length. They are fed in the morning and at night. It has taken about 3 years for this pond to develop with the grass and perennial growth around it. They are very proud of this place, and I look forward to escaping back to the country away from the big city. Hope you all enjoy the view.

Note from one of our visitors:

Hi my name is Barbara Windham  and I live in Northwest Florida.  My husband and I started a pond last year, our first!  I'm sending a picture.  I had always wanted one in the middle of my flower garden.  We did not put a liner under the waterfall.  I never thought about the water running else where.  Our fish also died during the winter this year also.  Is there something we should be doing to protect them in the winter months?  We have no problem with deer but our dog likes to get in the pond in the summer months so we put an electric fence around it to keep her out.  The other problem we came across is building it under trees.  We had a lot of leaves to pick up after the winter.  We also had to cover the pond with wire mesh to keep the leaves out of the pond.  I would like to build another one but need some advise on keeping my fish alive.  Please help.  By the way the fish we had were Koei's, not sure if the spelling is right.

Thanks,

Barbara Windham       s&bwindham@cyou.com

Note from one of our visitors:

Here are some pictures of my pond project. I live in southern Ontario Canada and wintered my koi with no problem. The pond is 3.5 feet deep. I put a bubbler in the pond to keep an opening in the ice. I also covered the pond in the fall to keep the leaves out.

P.S. Make sure you do not feed your fish when the water temp is below 50 f.

The fish can't digest at this temp. shawnandtheresa@sympatico.ca

Building a pond has been quite a experience.  One thing we have learned about waterfalls.  Place a liner under the waterfall before you build it.  Water loss will be reduced since water will soak into your rocks and cement and then into the ground.  Now if I could just keep the deer out of mine.

Also we are building a new two stage pond, once again we would love to see and hear about folks out there that have built a pond, to share this information with everyone.  Thanks!  Email us

This is Tom , from Pittsburgh. Sending a picture of this summer's labor, or
should I say fun. Increased the size ,with a flexible liner and a new
waterfall. I wanted the more natural looking rock.. did the waterfall on
labor day. But spend a few weekends before gathering rocks.. hope you like it.

Your pond looks great. Nice job !  sending you a pic of my humble pond. I put
it in during my vacation last year.. guess what I did this year ? .. well  I
put a bigger pond in. My first was a preformed liner. ( small ). Well I've
been bitten.. This year I used the flexible liner and made it 25" deep ,
about 10' by almost 5'  . Now I'm itching to re-do my waterfall.. with more
natural  rock. Sending you a pic of my first pond.. I'll send you a pic of my
updated pond ,when I get my film developed.. its my continuing project..
keeps me out of trouble..  great relaxation for those who can't sit too
long..  Thanks for the pic of your pond ,its really nice. Hope mine could
look so good.. take care..
